Lesson Nine
A review of Navigation on
the Desktop and in E-mail
We can use the right click on our mouse to help with a variety of
functions on the desktop and in e-mail.
Your anti-virus such as AVG free, will check to see if you are the
victim of a virus or worm if the sender of the message does not give
you the necessary reason to open the attachment in the body of the
message forwarded to you. Everyone should be sure to inform the person
who is receiving the e-mail that you are the one sending an attachment.
If this has not been done then right
click on the mail that has been sent.
Go to the bottom of the pull down menu
and click on properties.
Click on Detail at the top and a picture
of the e-mail will come up.
Scroll down to see the attachment.
If it is safe to open you can return to
the original e-mail and do so.
When you have completed installing a download from your desktop you can
click and drag the setup folder to the trash bin. To empty the trash
bin, you right click on it, and a pull down menu will appear. Click on
the delete and the bin will empty.
Some have inquired where the downloads have gone on their computer.
You should notice where the programs are downloaded to when you begin
the process. Example, C:\ Documents download folder
1. If you have not done so, make a folder in your documents and call it
"my downloads." This folder will keep your downloads in a place where
you can locate them.
2. Go to Start, Documents to check for downloads. If they are there you
can click on them and begin the installation process.
3. Most versions of Windows have installation wizards that install the
program for you.
4. If the program is on your desktop you can install it by clicking on
it there. The program will ask if you want an icon on your desktop and
put it there for you during installation.
Search engines.
Theses search engines can locate all of the information you can ever
want to find.
If you want to install a program or utility we have talked about in
class and cannot find a site to do it from then go to www.google.com Type
in the name of the program and you will find many sites to choose from
for installation.
For example the utility End it All is a program that should be used to
close out the programs running in the background on your computer
before starting to install a new download.
To install this program go to www.google.com and type in the search
area” end it all “ along with your operating system
(XP,Vista or Windows 7). Just click on a choice and it will take you to
the site for the download. This is a good program but it comes with
strong warnings. It will only stop the programs that are non-essential
to your computer so you can do downloads faster. When you turn off your
computer, the programs will go back to the default mode, and be ready
to run again when you turn the computer back on.
Zone Alarm can be found at other sites than the one mentioned in the
lesson. You can go to www.google.com
and do a search for it there to locate other sites to down load it from.
If you want to use the free anti virus program AVG you need to remove
the current anti virus program on your computer first before you
install it.
You can go to Start, Programs and look at the program to see if an
uninstall program is located there. If it is click on it and your
program will be uninstalled.
You can also do this by going to Start, Control Panel and click on "Add
or Remove Programs." Scroll down the programs to locate the program you
want to uninstall. You click on the program to highlight the program
and click on the uninstall button below the window. The program is now
uninstalled and you are ready to install a new program Before starting
the download a new program remember to click the end it all icon of
skull and crossbones on your desktop to stop the programs running in
the background before beginning the download. You are now ready to
install AVG anti virus. Go to www.google.com and
do a search for AVG.free. Locate a site to install the free version.
www.google.com
Don’t forget that the arrow marks at the end of the address
bar contain the other sites you have visited so you do not have to
retype the web page addresses every time. Just click on the arrow and
the pull down menu will appear with the previous sites listed. Click on
the site and it will appear in the address bar and go there for you.
Favorites can be saved by clicking on “Favorites”
on the tool bar, and then the save in the left column that appears You
can click and drag to move the favorites around in the list. For those
of you on AOL the heart on the web page can be clicked on to save to
the favorites on the tool bar.
Our web page is full of sites you can go to on the Internet to get free
downloads.
